Chapter 5 - Shattered Glass

Anna froze, her hand hovering over the heavy service door handle. "What are you talking about?"
"The documents you filed yesterday," the intruder wheezed, clutching his ribs. "The offshore accounts in the Caymans. They aren't Berto's. They're yours."
Before the words could fully register, a heavy shadow descended from the top of the stairs. Berto stepped down into the light, his knuckles bruised, his expression a mask of cold, frozen fury. Without a word, he crossed the distance between them, grabbed the intruder by the collar, and slammed him against the brick wall with a sickening crunch.
"Did he touch you?" Berto demanded, his voice trembling with a dark, feral rage that Anna had never witnessed before.
"I'm fine!" Anna shouted, grabbing Berto’s arm. "Berto, stop! What did he mean about the Cayman accounts? Why did he say they're mine?"
Berto slowly released the man, who slumped unconscious to the floor. The mafia boss turned to look at Anna, and for the first time in four years, she saw genuine panic flicker behind his impenetrable mask.
"You shouldn't have heard that," Berto said flatly.
"Berto." Her voice dropped to a hard, dangerous whisper. "Explain. Right now."
He let out a long, shuddering breath, running a hand through his disheveled hair. "When I hired you four years ago, you weren't a random applicant from an employment agency. Your father was an honest federal prosecutor who was framed and murdered by the Moretti syndicate. I found you drowning in debt, working dead-end jobs, completely unprotected."

Anna’s knees felt weak. The room seemed to tilt sideways. "You... you knew who I was?"
"I built your entire corporate profile from scratch," Berto confessed, stepping closer, his eyes pleading for understanding. "I channeled my offshore assets through a blind trust under your name so the feds would never trace them back to my family. You were my untouchable vault, Anna. But I kept you close because I couldn't risk losing you out there in the crossfire."
