Chapter 10 - New York State of Mind

Six months later, the federal trials had concluded. The Moretti syndicate was dismantled, its leadership locked away in federal supermax prisons. The Castiano empire, quietly restructured through legitimate legal channels with Anna acting as its chief operations officer rather than a hidden vault, had stepped out of the shadows.
The private office on the top floor of the Sterling building looked much the same, save for one crucial detail: the two desks had been pushed together, forming a sprawling command center of controlled chaos.
Anna dropped a stack of legitimate import-export files onto the mahogany desk. Three folders slipped from her grip, scattering across the pristine marble floor just like they had on day one.
Berto didn't even look up from his laptop. Without missing a beat, he reached down, scooped up the fallen folders, and placed them neatly back on the edge of the desk.
"You're doing that on purpose now," Anna accused, leaning against his desk with her arms crossed, wearing a sharp blazer instead of a nervous secretary's blouse. "You're picking up my files to infantilize me."
Berto finally looked up, a slow, devastatingly handsome smirk spreading across his angular face. He stood, closing the distance between them until she was pinned gently against the edge of the mahogany.
"I'm keeping my executive partner close," he murmured, his dark eyes burning with an intensity that made her breath catch. "Besides, if you stopped dropping paperwork, I wouldn't have an excuse to touch you."
"You have an office full of witnesses, Mr. Castiano," she teased, though her hands instinctively found their way to his lapels, straightening a tie that was already perfectly aligned.

"Let them look," Berto whispered, leaning down to press his lips softly against hers. "After all... is this how you have fun?"
"It beats filing taxes," Anna smiled against his mouth, finally right where she belonged.
