Chapter 7 - The Final Gambit

"Let her go, Dominic," Berto said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy calm as he slowly lowered his gun to the floor. "This is between you and me. She’s a civilian."

"She's a federal prosecutor's daughter sitting on forty million dollars in dirty syndicate funds," Dominic sneered, raising his own pistol and aiming it squarely at Anna's chest. "She stopped being a civilian the moment you dragged her into your syndicate, Berto. Now, transfer the Cayman accounts to my ledger, or I paint this brick wall with her brains."

Anna looked at Berto. The man who had terrorized New York, who had killed without blinking, was currently looking at her with an expression of pure, unadulterated devastation. The fierce, untouchable mafia boss had one single weakness, and Dominic was staring right at it.

"Do it," Anna said quietly.

Berto snapped his head toward her. "No."

"Transfer the money, Berto," she said, her voice steadying as a sudden, desperate resolve took over. She took a half-step forward, pretending to stumble—reverting, for a split second, to the clumsy girl she had played for four years. Her hand brushed against the unconscious operative's discarded burner phone on the floor.

Dominic laughed, distracted by her movement. "Smart girl. Castiano, open the terminal on your encrypted device—"

"I'm not clumsy, Dominic," Anna interrupted, her voice cutting through the tension like glass.

She kicked the heavy metal fire extinguisher beside the door, sending it crashing into Dominic’s shins while simultaneously diving to the floor and grabbing the burner phone.

Dominic shrieked in pain, firing blindly as he stumbled. A deafening roar echoed through the corridor.
