Chapter 14 - The Prodigal Uncle

Berto froze. For a fleeting second, the terrifying mafia boss looked entirely human—shocked, betrayed, and violently angry.
"Dante," Berto said, his voice dropping into a lethal, venomous hiss. "You died in Palermo six years ago. The car bomb left nothing to bury."
"A convenient narrative for a convenient retirement," Dante laughed, stepping closer while his mercenaries kept their automatic rifles trained squarely on Berto and Anna. "While you were playing corporate executive and falling in love with your secretary, I was rebuilding the old routes from the ground up. And now, you’re going to sign over the entire Castiano logistics network to my ledger—or I detonate the tactical core sitting in that container and wipe half of Brooklyn off the map."
Anna’s mind raced. She glanced at the blinking red light on the container, then down at Dante’s hand, where a wireless dead-man’s switch blinked in rhythm with the device. She knew standard negotiation tactics wouldn't work here. Dante wasn't interested in money; he wanted absolute control, and he was willing to burn an empire to ashes to get it.
"You're bluffing," Anna spoke up, stepping out from behind Berto’s shoulder with an icy composure that surprised even him. "If you detonate a tactical explosive in a civilian port, federal intelligence will hunt you to the ends of the earth before nightfall. You wouldn't survive twenty-four hours."
Dante’s gaze flicked to Anna, his smile sharpening into something predatory. "Ah. The clever little secretary. Berto’s greatest weakness, wrapped in a designer blazer. You think I care about federal manhunts, my dear? I’m already a ghost."

"Dante," Berto interrupted, his voice steady, though his fingers twitched near his concealed weapon. "Leave her out of this. The feud is between us. Take the accounts, take the offshore holdings, but let her walk."
"I don't negotiate with subordinates, nephew," Dante sneered, lifting his thumb slightly over the detonator button. "Sign the transfer documents on your encrypted terminal right now, or watch her turn into ash."
