Chapter 3 - The Unspoken Rhythms

The center of the ballroom floor felt like a stage under a microscope. As Berto pulled her against him, Anna felt the rigid, coiled tension in his frame. For a man who ruled half the docks on the East Coast, he moved with surprising grace, guiding her through the slow waltz with a practiced ease that surprised her.

"You're shaking," he noted quietly, his gaze fixed on a point just above her left ear.

"I am not shaking. I'm vibrating with suppressed rage at your sudden romantic impulses," she retorted, though her voice lacked its usual bite. Being this close to him—close enough to smell the faint trace of cedar, tobacco, and expensive soap—was scrambling her internal wiring.

"Rage," Berto repeated, a ghost of a smirk touching his lips. "Is that what you call the way you're staring at my lapel?"

"I'm checking for blood stains. It's an occupational hazard."

"There's nothing on me, Anna. Tonight is clean." He spun her gently, bringing her flush against his chest before stepping back out. "At least for another few hours."

"Comforting," she murmured, looking up into his stark, shadowed eyes. In the dim, romantic lighting, the harsh angles of his face softened just enough to make her heart do a reckless, unauthorized flip. Four years of late nights, endless spreadsheets, smuggled manifests, and dry humor had built a fortress around her professional boundaries. Tonight, those walls felt dangerously fragile. "Why did you really step in back there with Dominic?"

Berto stopped moving, the music swelling around them as the other couples blurred past. He held her gaze, his expression dropping all its defensive armor. "Because he was looking at something that belongs to me."

Anna’s breath hitched. "I don't belong to you, Berto. I'm an employee."

"Are you?" he asked softly, his thumb lightly brushing the back of her hand. Before she could answer, a sharp flash of camera light cut through the gloom from the balcony above. Berto’s head snapped up, his mafia-instincts flaring instantly, but the shadow was already gone.
