Chapter 6 - The Betrayal Within

The betrayal hit her like a physical blow. Four years of loyalty, secret jokes, late nights, and a growing, unspoken affection—all built on a foundation of calculated manipulation.
"You used me as a human shield," Anna whispered, her voice cracking as hot tears of fury spilled over her lashes. "You made me an unwitting accomplice to organized crime while I thought I was just a clumsy secretary making coffee and fixing your ties."
"I protected you!" Berto shouted, the veneer of control finally shattering. "Do you have any idea how many hits have been taken out on my inner circle? If Dominic or the Chicago syndicate knew who you really were—knew whose daughter you carried the name of—they would have skinned you alive years ago! Keeping you in my office was the only way I could keep you breathing!"
"And you didn't think to ask me?" she lashed out, stepping back as he reached for her. "You didn't think I had a right to choose my own life, my own vengeance? You played God, Berto. Just like every other monster in this city."
Before Berto could answer, the warehouse-style side door burst open. Armed men in black ski masks poured into the service corridor, automatic weapons raised. Dominic Moretti stepped out from behind them, a sadistic grin plastered across his face.

"Well, well, well," Dominic laughed, clapping his hands slowly. "Family reunion in the back alley. How touching. Drop the weapon, Castiano, or the clever little secretary takes the first bullet."
Berto’s body went completely rigid. His eyes darted from the armed mercenaries to Anna, calculating angles, assessing odds, realizing with horrifying clarity that for all his power, he was checkmated.
