Chapter 15 - The Diversion

Berto’s hand moved slowly toward his jacket, his eyes locked onto Dante with a terrifying, calm focus. He was calculating the distance, the wind speed, the reaction time of the mercenaries—preparing to sacrifice himself to buy Anna three seconds of escape.

Anna saw the shift in his posture immediately. She knew that look. It was the look of a man ready to die for her.

And she wasn't going to let him.

"You know," Anna said loudly, taking a deliberate step forward while pretending to lose her balance on a patch of oily gravel. "Your security protocol is actually terrible, Dante."

Dante frowned, momentarily distracted. "What did you say?"

"I said your transponder spoofing was amateur hour," Anna snapped, stumbling forward and intentionally slamming her shoulder against the nearest mercenary's rifle barrel, throwing his aim off while simultaneously kicking a loose iron pipe across the concrete.

The pipe clattered loudly against the metal container, creating a sharp acoustic distraction.

Chaos erupted in a fraction of a second. Berto moved with blinding, feral speed, drawing his weapon and firing two precise shots that took down the closest guards before they could adjust their sights. Dante yelled in rage, pressing his thumb down on the wireless trigger—

Click.

Nothing happened.

Dante stared at the remote in disbelief. The blinking red light on the container had suddenly turned a solid, calming blue.
