Chapter 4 - The Fall of the Titan

Thirty-six hours later, the front page of every major financial publication featured a high-resolution mugshot of Ethan Sterling. The headline screamed in bold, accusatory black letters: FALL OF A TITAN: STERLING GLOBAL FOUNDER ARRESTED IN MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD AND EMBEZZLEMENT SCHEME.

Ethan sat in a sterile, windowless holding cell at the federal detention center, the metal bench biting into his back. The clothes he wore were still the same crumpled suit from the hospital, now stained with dust and fatigue. He hadn't slept. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Lily’s terrified face on the marble floor, and then he heard Elena’s mocking laughter echoing in his ears.

The heavy steel door of the holding cell unlocked with a loud, mechanical clunk.

A guard pushed the door open, and standing in the doorway was Marcus—looking pale, shaken, and sporting a nasty bruise along his jawline, but miraculously free and wearing a sharp tailored suit.

"Ethan," Marcus said quietly, stepping inside and closing the door behind him.

Ethan didn't stand up. He just looked up slowly, his eyes bloodshot and burning with a cold, terrifying fire. "You took your sweet time getting here. Or were you too busy helping Elena count the cash?"

Marcus flinched as if struck. He pulled out the folding metal chair, sat down across from Ethan, and rested his elbows on his knees, burying his face in his hands for a long moment before looking up.

"I swear to God, Ethan, I had no idea she was playing a double game," Marcus whispered, his voice trembling with genuine anguish. "She was my compliance officer for four years. She passed every background check. She... she drugged me, Ethan. In my own house. I woke up tied to a chair with federal marshals kicking my front door down. By the time I got loose, the damage was already done."

Ethan stared at him for a long, agonizingly silent beat, searching Marcus’s face for any sign of deception. He saw the genuine terror, the exhaustion, and the profound guilt etched into every wrinkle. Marcus wasn't the mastermind; he was just another pawn who had been manipulated by a master chess player.

"They froze everything," Ethan said flatly, his voice devoid of emotion. "My accounts, my properties, my corporate cards. Even the trust fund I set up for Lily when she was born."

"Not everything," Marcus corrected, leaning forward.

Ethan’s head snapped up. "What are you talking about?"

"Vivian and Elena were thorough, but they were arrogant," Marcus said, his professional instincts kicking back in. "They assumed you kept all your liquid assets in the primary corporate holdings. But three years ago, after your divorce from your second venture went sour, I advised you to set up an offline, non-digital contingency trust—the Orion Account. It’s completely disconnected from Sterling Global’s network. They can't touch it because they don't even know it exists."

A grim, humorless smile touched the corner of Ethan’s mouth. "How much?"

"Enough," Marcus replied. "Enough to hire the best legal defense team in the country, rebuild from the ground up, and tear Vivian and Elena’s empire down to ash."

"Good," Ethan stood up, the weariness vanishing from his posture as the corporate predator reawoke. "Because we aren't just going to clear my name. We are going to hunt them down."

"There's one more thing," Marcus added, hesitating as he reached into his briefcase and pulled out a thick manila folder. "It's about Lily. After you were arrested, Child Protective Services stepped in. Because Vivian had temporary custody papers filed, they took her from the hospital."

Ethan’s blood turned to ice. "Where is she?"

"That's the problem," Marcus said grimly, sliding the folder across the table. "She's not with CPS. Vivian checked her out of the hospital using a forged medical discharge form four hours ago. And according to border control logs, they're on a private jet bound for an undisclosed location outside the country."
