Chapter 12 - The Second Shadow

Sarah’s eyes widened in sudden, absolute terror. She lunged forward, shoving Ethan hard to the side just as a deafening roar tore through the cabin air.
BANG!
A high-caliber bullet shattered the wooden doorframe inches from Ethan's head, spraying razor-sharp splinters across the room. Through the smoke and shattered wood, a tall, imposing figure stepped into the cabin.
It wasn't a federal marshal, and it wasn't one of Victor’s prison cronies. It was a man wearing an immaculate custom-tailored Italian suit, holding a suppressed tactical pistol with cold, practiced ease. On his lapel gleamed a pin shaped like a golden ouroboros—the ancient symbol of an eternal, self-devouring serpent.
"Family reunions are always so messy," the man said smoothly, his voice silky and dripping with aristocratic disdain. He glanced down at Sarah, who was shielding Ethan with her own body. "Ah, Dr. Sterling. We thought we cleaned up all the loose ends six years ago. Imagine our surprise when your husband’s little corporate crusade started digging up accounts tied to the Board of the Syndicate."
Ethan pushed himself up from the dusty floorboards, his protective instincts overriding every shred of fear. "Who the hell are you?"
"My name is Julian Vance," the man replied, lowering the pistol slightly but keeping it trained squarely on Ethan’s chest. "Not a half-brother like Victor, nor a pawn like Vivian. I am the one who authorized your company's creation, Ethan. And I am the one who will now dismantle it—brick by brick, blood by blood."
Julian raised his weapon, his finger tightening on the trigger. But before the hammer could fall, a blinding glare cut through the dusty windows of the cabin.
SCREEECH!
A heavy armored SUV crashed directly through the rotting side wall of the cabin, showering the room in a storm of splintered wood and flying glass. The passenger door flew open, and Marcus leaned out, gripping a heavy tactical shotgun.
"Drop the weapon, or I turn you into Swiss cheese!" Marcus roared, his face twisted in absolute fury.

Julian didn't panic. He simply smiled, lowered his pistol, and stepped backward into the thick fog rolling off the lake. "You can't shoot your way out of this, Ethan. The syndicate owns the judges, the banks, and the borders. Enjoy your daughter while you still can."
In a flash, Julian dissolved into the thick alpine mist, leaving behind only the echoing sound of a waiting helicopter lifting off from the nearby ridge.
