Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Server Room

The underground parking garage of Sterling Global Enterprises was pitch black, save for the sickly yellow hum of overhead sodium lights casting long, flickering shadows across rows of luxury sedans. Ethan’s footsteps echoed sharply against the concrete as he made a beeline for his private elevator bank, his mind racing through the logistics of Marcus’s cryptic warning.
As he approached the heavy steel doors leading to the subterranean server wing, he noticed something was wrong. The biometric security scanner, usually glowing a steady, welcoming blue, was dark and unresponsive.
Ethan drew his keys, using the heavy metal fob to manually override the locking mechanism. The door swung open with a heavy, metallic groan, releasing a blast of chilled air mixed with the faint, unmistakable smell of burnt ozone.
"Marcus?" Ethan called out into the dim cavern of humming server racks.
No answer. Only the rhythmic whir-click of massive hard drives processing data in the dark.
Ethan walked down the central aisle, his eyes scanning the endless rows of blinking LED lights. The server room was the beating heart of his multi-billion-dollar empire—every financial transaction, every confidential email, every corporate blueprint passed through these terminals.
Suddenly, a sharp clink echoed from the far corner near the master terminal.
Ethan froze, his senses instantly sharpening. He sidestepped behind a heavy rack of Dell servers, holding his breath as he peered down the aisle.
Sitting in front of the primary monitor was a figure clad in a dark hoodie, fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with blistering speed. On the screen, a progress bar titled ASSET_TRANSFER_FINALIZATION.EXE sat at 94%.
"Stop right there," Ethan commanded, stepping out from the shadows, his voice a lethal crack of thunder.
The figure paused. Slowly, the chair spun around.
The hood fell back, revealing not Marcus, and not Vivian. It was Elena—Marcus’s chief compliance officer and his secret mistress of five years. Her face was completely devoid of fear; instead, a cold, mocking smirk played across her lips.
"You're a little late, Ethan," Elena said smoothly, leaning back in her ergonomic chair and tapping a final command onto the enter key. The progress bar jumped to 100%. TRANSFER COMPLETE.
Ethan lunged forward, grabbing her by the collar of her hoodie and hauling her out of the chair, slamming her against the metal server rack with enough force to rattle the hardware.
"Where is Marcus? What did you just do?" Ethan demanded, his face inches from hers, veins bulging in his neck.
Elena didn't flinch. She just smiled wider, a trickle of blood escaping the corner of her lip from the impact.
"Marcus is currently indisposed," Elena laughed softly, her voice dripping with venom. "Tied to a chair in his own vacation home with a heavy-duty sedative pumping through his IV. And as for what I just did? I just legally stripped you of every single penny you own. The accounts are frozen. Your credit cards are dead. Your corporate holdings are now the sole property of the 'Sterling-Vance Foundation'—which, coincidentally, is entirely controlled by Vivian and me."
Ethan’s grip tightened until his knuckles turned white. "You think money matters to me? I will spend every waking moment and every ounce of my remaining influence to throw both of you into a maximum-security prison for the rest of your lives."
"Go ahead," Elena whispered, her eyes locking onto his with chilling satisfaction. "Try to sue us. Try to hire lawyers. Without a retainer, without a bank account, and with a federal investigation into corporate tax fraud we just framed you for, you won't even make it past the front gates of this building."
Before Ethan could react, the overhead lights in the server room completely died, plunging the entire floor into pitch blackness. A deafening alarm shrieked to life, and a computerized voice blared from the intercom speakers:
“FEDERAL ASSET SEIZURE WARRANT ACTIVE. MR. ETHAN STERLING, YOU ARE UNDER ARREST FOR FRAUD, EMBEZZLEMENT, AND MONEY LAUNDERING.”
Heavy tactical boots thudded down the concrete stairs outside the server room door. Flashlights cut through the darkness, blinding Ethan with brilliant, searing white beams.

"Federal agents! Don't move! Hands where we can see them!"
Ethan stood frozen in the dark, the trap snapping shut around him with terrifying precision.
