Chapter 7 - The Final Chess Move

Three weeks later, the courtroom of the Federal District Court of New York was packed to absolute capacity. Flashbulbs blinded the defendants as U.S. Marshals escorted Victor, Vivian, and Elena into the gallery in handcuffs and matching orange jumpsuits. The trial had been the most publicized corporate conspiracy case of the decade, streaming live to millions of viewers across the globe.

Ethan sat at the prosecution’s table, flanked by Marcus and a team of top-tier litigators. He wore a crisp navy suit, his posture upright and commanding, the picture of absolute resilience.

Judge Sterling—no relation—banged his gavel once, restoring absolute silence to the courtroom.

"In the matter of United States v. Victor Sterling, Vivian Sterling, and Elena Vance," the judge announced, his voice echoing off the mahogany-paneled walls. "The jury has reached a unanimous verdict on all counts of grand larceny, corporate espionage, forgery, child abuse, and conspiracy."

Vivian stared down at her lap, her face pale, her hair unbrushed, sobbing quietly into her orange-clad sleeves. Elena sat rigid, staring straight ahead with a mask of bitter defeat. Victor sneered, casting one last venomous glance toward Ethan across the aisle.

"On all counts, the jury finds the defendants: GUILTY."

A collective murmur rippled through the courtroom gallery, quickly silenced by a sharp wave of the bailiff’s hand.

"Victor Sterling, you are hereby sentenced to twenty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole," the judge declared, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "Vivian Sterling, fifteen years for conspiracy, fraud, and systematic child abuse. Elena Vance, twenty years for corporate sabotage and money laundering. Court is adjourned."

BAM!

The gavel struck the sounding block, signaling the definitive end of the nightmare.

As the marshals led the three convicts away through the heavy oak side doors, Vivian turned back one last time, her eyes locking onto Ethan with a look of pure, unadulterated venom.

"You haven't won, Ethan!" she screamed before the heavy steel doors slammed shut, cutting off her voice entirely.

Ethan didn't even flinch. He stood up, buttoned his jacket, and shook Marcus’s hand firmly.

"It's over," Marcus breathed out, a massive weight lifting from his shoulders. "Sterling Global’s board has officially reinstated you as CEO with unanimous support. The assets have been fully recovered."

"Good," Ethan replied calmly. "Because I have somewhere else to be."
