Chapter 11 - The Dead Do Not Stay Quiet

The kerosene lamp flickered, casting long, distorted shadows that danced across the rotting timber walls of the old hunting cabin. Sarah stood just three paces away from him. She wasn't the ghost Ethan had mourned for half a decade; she was flesh, blood, and bone, though her eyes held the haunted, hollowed-out look of a woman who had lived in purgatory. A jagged white scar cut across her left jawline—the permanent souvenir of the night her life was stolen from her.

Ethan tried to speak, but his vocal cords refused to cooperate. Every word he wanted to say—Where were you? Why didn’t you come back? How could you let me think you were dead?—lodged in his throat like broken glass.

"Don't look at me like I'm a monster, Ethan," Sarah whispered, her voice cracking as a single tear traced the line of her scar. "If I had come back to you, Victor would have killed you both. The moment I discovered what he was laundering through Sterling Global’s accounts, my car was sabotaged. I survived the crash, but Victor’s men were waiting at the wreckage. They gave me a choice: walk away into total obscurity, or watch them cut our newborn daughter out of our lives permanently."

Ethan took a step forward, his hands trembling violently. "Victor is in a maximum-security federal prison. He can't hurt us anymore. The trial is over. We won."

Sarah let out a bitter, humorless laugh that sent a chill straight down Ethan’s spine.

"Prison?" She shook her head slowly. "Ethan, you don't understand the depth of this swamp. Victor was never the head of the snake. He was just a regional manager for a global syndicate that makes billionaires look like street beggars."

Before Ethan could process the terrifying weight of her words, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the doorway behind her.
