Chapter 16 - The Final Stand at the Lake House

The cold wind off Lake Geneva whipped across the wooden dock as Ethan and Sarah sprinted toward the old boathouse at the water's edge. The moon was completely obscured by thick, ink-black storm clouds, turning the landscape into a canvas of shadows and silver spray.

Standing on the wooden pier, waiting for them under the flickering amber light of a single dock lamp, was Julian Vance.

In front of Julian sat a single wooden chair, and bound tightly to it with heavy zip ties was Lily, her eyes wide with silent terror, though a piece of black tape muffled her cries.

"Drop your weapons!" Julian commanded, resting the barrel of his pistol casually against Lily’s temple. "One twitch, one smart move, and your daughter joins her mother in the history books."

Ethan and Sarah froze instantly. Ethan dropped his rifle onto the wooden planks, his hands raised slowly. Sarah did the same, her chest heaving as tears streamed down her face.

"Let her go, Julian," Ethan growled, his voice trembling with a rage so intense it felt nuclear. "You wanted the ledger? Here it is." He pulled the encrypted hard drive from his pocket and tossed it onto the wooden dock at Julian’s feet.

Julian smiled coldly, nudging the drive with the toe of his polished shoe. "Smart man, Ethan. You always were a pragmatist."

He reached down to pick up the drive, his pistol drifting away from Lily’s head for a fraction of a second.

That microsecond was all Ethan needed.

With blinding speed, Ethan lunged forward, launching himself across the wooden pier like a coiled spring. At the exact same moment, Sarah dropped to the floor, sweeping her leg out to kick a loose wooden oar directly into Julian’s shins.

Julian stumbled backward, losing his balance as Ethan slammed into him with bone-crushing force. The pistol flew from Julian’s hand, clattering across the wooden boards and plunging into the dark, freezing waters of the lake.

Ethan straddled Julian on the edge of the pier, raining savage, unchecked blows down onto his face until the syndicate leader’s nose shattered and he slumped back, unconscious and bleeding profusely.
