Chapter 9 - The Shadow That Remains

Midnight descended upon the Sterling estate, wrapping the sprawling mansion in a blanket of absolute silence. The security lights cast geometric patterns across the manicured hedges, and the lake outside shimmered like a sheet of hammered obsidian under the moonlight.
Inside her bedroom upstairs, Lily slept soundly in her canopy bed, clutching a stuffed brown bear tightly to her chest. The dark circles under her eyes were gone, replaced by the rosy glow of a child who finally felt safe in her own home.
Downstairs in the private study, Ethan sat at his mahogany desk, reviewing the final restructuring documents of Sterling Global Enterprises. The glowing amber light of his desk lamp illuminated the room.
Suddenly, the sleek, modern security monitor built into the corner of the bookshelf beeped softly.
BEEP.
Ethan looked up, frowning slightly. The motion sensors on the outer perimeter ridge—the exact same sensors that had flashed during the Swiss raid—had just registered a single blip.
He reached out, tapping the touch screen to pull up the live thermal feed from the northern tree line.
At first, the screen showed only swaying pine branches and the dark expanse of the forest. But then, a figure stepped out from the shadows of the treeline.
It was a woman. Dressed entirely in black tactical gear, her face obscured by a dark hood, standing motionless just fifty yards from the perimeter fence, staring directly into the lens of the security camera.
Ethan’s breath hitched in his throat.
The woman slowly raised her right hand, holding something small and reflective up to the camera lens. It was a silver locket—the exact same locket Ethan’s late wife, Sarah, had worn the day she died in a mysterious car accident five years ago.
Before Ethan could hit the intercom or grab his phone, the figure on the screen lowered the locket, turned around, and melted back into the dark shadows of the forest as if she had never been there at all.
Ethan stood up so fast his chair crashed backward onto the Persian rug. He stared at the blank screen, his blood turning to ice in his veins.

Vivian was in federal prison. Victor was locked away for twenty-five years. Elena was behind bars.
So who... who had Sarah’s locket?
