Chapter 15 - Fire and SteelRamon and his men dropped from the service catwalk directly into the sub-level corridor behind the advancing mercenaries.

"Light them up!" Ramon roared.

The narrow hallway transformed into a roaring tunnel of fire and lead. Matteo unleashed a continuous stream of suppressive fire from his light machine gun, catching the rear guard of the mercenary squad before they could turn. Brass casings bounced wildly off the concrete, piling up in glittering heaps.

The mercenary commander—a massive brute in reinforced body armor—turned his heavy assault rifle toward Ramon, firing wildly. Bullets chewed into the concrete wall inches from Ramon’s head, spraying stone dust into his eyes.

Ramon didn't flinch. He rolled low, sliding across the slick concrete floor right under the commander’s line of fire, and drove his combat knife straight upward through the soft armor beneath the man's armpit.

The commander gasped, dropping his weapon as Ramon twisted the blade and shoved him hard against the wall.

"Who sent you?" Ramon whispered, his face inches from the dying man's mask.

"The... the high table..." the mercenary choked out, blood bubbling from his lips. "The vote... was unanimous. You... and the girl... are wiped from the ledger."

The man went limp. Ramon pulled his blade free, wiping it clean on the dead man's tactical vest, and turned his cold, piercing gaze toward the shattered safe room door at the end of the corridor.
