Chapter 5 - The Ledger of SinsThe room fell into a silence so absolute that the hum of the medical monitors sounded like a jackhammer.
Victor and Diego exchanged sharp, disbelieving glances. Ramon didn't blink. His expression remained a mask of carved stone, but inside his mind, gears shifted with violent precision.
"My father died an only child," Ramon stated, his voice dangerously low. "He had no other heirs. I am the sole bloodline of the Ortega name."
"Legally? Publicly? Yes," Elena countered, leaning forward, wincing slightly as the movement pulled at her bruised neck muscles. "In the shadows? No. Your father had a second family—a secret kept from the council, hidden away in a safehouse in the eastern hills before he took full control of the syndicate. My older sister was his second wife. She died giving birth to Maya's mother... my niece."
Elena pointed a trembling finger toward the little girl in the corner.
"When your father was assassinated, the remaining Vanguard loyalists took the child to protect her from the internal power struggle. But when they realized the old ledger—the one your father used to blackmail half the government—was hidden inside a vault tied to her biometric signature, the game changed. They didn't want to protect her anymore. They wanted to use her to open the vault, and then erase her."
Ramon stepped back slowly, sliding his hands into his trouser pockets. He looked at Maya. The resemblance was subtle—the dark, piercing shape of the eyes, the sharp line of the jawline when she wasn't crying—traits he saw every morning in the mirror.
"You expect me to believe a convenient fairy tale spun by a woman found hanging from a tree," Ramon said calmly, though the air in the room grew heavy with pressure.
"I don't expect you to believe anything, Ramon," Elena replied, reaching beneath the hospital gown to pull a small, encrypted micro-drive hidden in the hem. She tossed it onto the steel counter next to the silver medallion. "Check the encryption code. It uses your family's private cipher—the one only your father and his primary successor knew. That drive contains the location of the vault. And it contains the names of the men who betrayed your father from the inside."
Before Ramon could reach for the drive, the overhead fluorescent lights flickered violently and died.
The backup emergency lighting kicked in a second later, bathing the sterile white room in a sickly, pulsing crimson glow.

The security monitor on the far wall flared to life, shifting from a steady grid of empty corridors to a single flashing warning icon: PERIMETER BREACH - SECTOR 4 - SUB-LEVEL B.
"Boss!" Matteo shouted, bursting through the double doors from the control room. "The blast doors to the underground tunnel have been bypassed. They're inside."
