Chapter 9 - The Final Exit"Boss! We have one minute thirty seconds before the primary charges blow!" Victor screamed over the deafening klaxon, sprinting into the vault. "We have to move, now!"

Ramon looked down at the fallen Deacon, then reached down and picked up the heavy leather ledger, slipping it into his jacket alongside the micro-drive and the silver medallion.
"Get Elena and the child to the armored transport in the lower bay," Ramon ordered, turning on his heel. "Move!"
They scrambled through the labyrinthine corridors of the collapsing subterranean base as emergency shutters slammed down behind them, sealing off sections of the facility in a series of heavy booms. The ground shook violently beneath their boots, chunks of concrete and dust raining down from the ceiling like a premature avalanche.
Diego and Victor practically carried Elena and little Maya through the final access hatch, bursting out into the cold, gray morning air just as the forest around the abandoned shipping yard began to tremble.
They threw themselves into the second black luxury car as the engine roared to life. Diego slammed the armored door shut just as a muffled, subterranean shockwave ripped through the earth behind them.
The ground buckled, a massive plume of smoke and dust shooting up through the canopy of the ancient pine trees a quarter-mile away, swallowing the clearing where the morning had started. The underground base was gone, buried beneath tons of rock and soil forever.
Inside the quiet, climate-controlled interior of the speeding car, the only sound was the ragged breathing of little Maya, who slowly lifted her head from Elena's shoulder and peered up into the front seat.
Ramon sat in the front passenger seat, staring straight ahead through the windshield as the car tore down the empty highway away from the fog. He reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out the heavy silver medallion, and tossed it onto the center console.
Elena pulled Maya closer, her ice-blue eyes fixed on the back of Ramon's head.
"What happens to us now, Ramon?" Elena asked quietly, her voice trembling slightly in the tense silence of the vehicle. "You have the ledger. You have the vault. We're loose ends."
Ramon didn't turn around immediately. He adjusted his cuffs, his dark, unreadable eyes catching the reflection of the little girl in the rearview mirror—a little girl who shared his blood, who carried the secret keys to an empire built on shadow and survival.

"You aren't loose ends, Elena," Ramon said, his voice dropping into a steady, authoritative calm as he looked back down at the road ahead. "The Vanguard is dead. The past is buried under a mountain of concrete. And my family... takes care of its own."
Maya blinked, her red-rimmed eyes locking onto Ramon's gaze in the mirror. For the first time all morning, the terror in her expression faded, replaced by the quiet, dangerous resolve of an Ortega.
