Chapter 8 - The Vault of SecretsThe heavy hydraulic door of the sub-basement vault was half-open, its complex mechanical gears grinding against a heavy iron wedge jammed into the frame.

Diego stood just inside the threshold, holding his tactical shotgun steady, his breathing heavy. Behind him, huddled in the far corner of the reinforced concrete room, Elena held little Maya tight against her chest, both of them trembling.

"Diego!" Ramon’s voice echoed down the corridor as he rounded the corner at a dead sprint, Victor and Matteo right behind him. "Status!"

"He bypassed the exterior lock using an ultrasonic emitter!" Diego shouted over the whining alarm klaxon. "He's inside the vault!"

Ramon didn't hesitate. He vaulted over a fallen security barrier, drew his sidearm, and kicked the half-open vault door completely wide.

The interior of the vault was vast, lined with towering rows of steel safety deposit boxes and old analog filing cabinets. In the center of the room, standing before an open central console that glowed with a faint blue biometric scanner light, was the Deacon.

He had one hand placed firmly on the glass scanner plate. A red digital progress bar on the console blinked: BIOMETRIC MATCH CONFIRMED - VAULT 001 UNLOCKED.

"Too late, Ramon," the Deacon laughed, blood dripping from a cut above his lip. "The vault is open. The ledger is mine. The entire syndicate—every politician, every cartel boss, every hidden asset—belongs to the man who holds the keys."

He reached inside the open central vault drawer and pulled out a heavy, leather-bound book with silver corners—the original Vanguard Ledger.

"You think my father left that ledger unprotected for twenty years?" Ramon asked, his voice chillingly calm as he raised his pistol, locking the laser sight directly between the Deacon's eyes.

The Deacon paused, his smile faltering slightly. "What are you talking about?"

"My father didn't just hide the ledger," Ramon said, stepping slowly into the vault. "He rigged the binding with a dead-man's switch tied to the primary security grid of this entire compound. The moment you opened that vault without the master override phrase, the system didn't just unlock the drawer... it armed the self-destruct sequence."

The digital display on the console suddenly shifted from blue to a flashing, high-intensity crimson warning: CRITICAL SYSTEM ALERT - FACILITY SELF-DESTRUCT IN 180 SECONDS.

A computerized voice echoed mechanically throughout the underground facility: Warning. Facility self-destruct initiated. Evacuate immediately.

The Deacon’s eyes went wide with sheer panic. He dropped the leather ledger, lunging forward with his machete in a desperate, suicidal charge.

"If I die, you die with me!" the Deacon shrieked.

Ramon didn't flinch. He squeezed the trigger once.

May you like

Bang.

The bullet caught the Deacon square in the chest, stopping his momentum instantly. He staggered forward, dropped his blade with a metallic clang, and collapsed onto the cold concrete floor right at Ramon's feet, his eyes staring blankly at the ceiling as the red emergency lights pulsed above them.
