Chapter 1 - The Shattered ClockThe cold dawn of Manhattan’s winter bit sharply through the floorboards of the servants’ quarters, but Elena Carter barely felt it. Her heart was still hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

She stood in the narrow doorway of her tiny room, staring up at the most feared man in the New York underworld. Adrian Moretti—a man whose very shadow made politicians sweat and rival syndicates scatter—was standing in a staff hallway at 5:00 AM, looking exhausted, humbled, and entirely out of place.

Beside her, three-year-old Mia clutched her battered brown teddy bear, looking up at Adrian with an expression of supreme, pint-sized vindication.

“I told you,” Mia repeated, her small voice cutting through the silent corridor. “My mommy doesn’t lie.”

Adrian stared down at the child. For a man who ruled a vast criminal empire with absolute, unyielding coldness, the simple moral clarity of a toddler was an assault he hadn't trained for. He cleared his throat, his broad shoulders shifting beneath his black dress shirt.

“You did,” Adrian conceded, his voice low and gravelly. He shifted his gaze back to Elena, meeting her wide, disbelieving eyes. “The security logs from the west wing were reviewed. Rachel Adler confessed. The antique clock was knocked off its shelf by her elbow while she was carrying paperwork for Salvatore. You were entirely innocent, Elena.”

Elena swallowed hard, her hand instinctively resting on Mia’s shoulder. “Thank you, Mr. Moretti. For checking the footage.”

“It’s the least I could do,” Adrian said stiffly. He hesitated for a fraction of a second, a flicker of something unreadable crossing his sharp features. “If there is anything you need to replace what was lost—or if you require compensation for the accusation—tell Mrs. Whitfield.”

“No,” Elena said softly, her chin lifting just a fraction. “I don't want compensation. I just want to do my job in peace, Mr. Moretti. And protect my daughter.”

Adrian nodded slowly. He looked as though he wanted to say more, but the heavy, unspoken barrier of their respective worlds stood between them. Without another word, he turned on his heel and walked down the dim corridor, his heavy footsteps fading into the silence of the massive estate.

Little did Elena know, Adrian’s departure didn't mean the end of the storm.

Down in the private underground garage, Salvatore Rizzi was leaning against the passenger door of a black sedan, smoking a cigarette as he watched Adrian approach. Salvatore’s eyes were narrowed, his silver-streaked hair catching the harsh fluorescent lights.

“You went down there yourself to apologize to a housekeeper, Adrian?” Salvatore asked, his voice dripping with smooth, dangerous skepticism. “Since when does the head of the Moretti family offer personal penance to the hired help?”

Adrian pulled his leather gloves on, his jaw tightening. “Since she was innocent, Sal. And since I made a mistake.”

“A mistake is a business miscalculation,” Salvatore murmured, stepping closer, a shadow of cold calculation crossing his face. “Showing weakness in front of a domestic worker—and worse, letting her kid back you into a corner—that’s a liability. Especially given who that woman is.”

Adrian stopped cold, turning to face his oldest, most trusted friend. “What do you mean, who that woman is?”

Salvatore exhaled a thin stream of gray smoke into the cold air. “I ran a deeper background check on Elena Carter after the incident yesterday. You might want to take a look at her maiden name, boss. And the man her father used to work for.”
