Chapter 8 - A Promise KeptThe panic room door hissed open, sliding smoothly back into the reinforced concrete wall.

Elena was sitting on the floor inside, holding Mia tightly against her chest. When she saw Adrian step through the threshold—his shirt stained with soot, his hair disheveled, but standing upright—she gasped, scrambling to her feet.

“Mr. Moretti… are you okay? What happened?” she asked, her eyes darting over him for injuries.

“It’s over,” Adrian said, his voice softer than she had ever heard it before. “Salvatore and Marcus… they won't bother you ever again. The threat is gone.”

Elena closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath of pure relief. She sank back against the wall, sliding down until she was sitting on the carpet again, entirely drained of adrenaline.

Adrian walked over and knelt down beside her, stopping just short of touching her shoulder.

“Elena,” he said quietly.

She looked up at him, her tear-stained face looking suddenly so young, so fragile, yet so fierce.

“I checked the old financial archives from my father’s safe,” Adrian continued, holding out a weathered, leather-bound book with yellowed pages. “Your father’s duplicate ledger. It was locked away in Sal’s private vault.”

Elena stared at the book as if it were a ghost.

“It proves every single entry,” Adrian said, his voice thick with emotion. “Your father was innocent. He didn't steal a dime. My father… my father framed him to save his own skin.”

A single tear slipped down Elena’s cheek, but this time, it wasn't a tear of fear. It was the release of twenty-five years of grief, suspicion, and survival.

“He’s cleared,” she whispered. “My father’s name… it’s cleared.”

“Yes,” Adrian said firmly. “And I am deeply, truly sorry for what my family took from yours.”

Before Elena could answer, a small, sleepy voice piped up from behind her skirt.

Mia rubbed her eyes, poking her head out like a curious turtle.

“Are the bad guys gone?” she asked.

Adrian looked down at the little girl. For the first time in his life, the impenetrable walls around his heart cracked wide open, letting in a warmth he had never known existed.

He smiled—a real, gentle smile that completely transformed his harsh features.

“Yes, little one,” Adrian said softly, holding out his hand. “The bad guys are gone.”

Mia looked at her mother, then placed her small, warm hand directly into Adrian’s massive palm.
