Chapter 17 - Shadows DissolveBack in New York, the morning sun broke through the autumn clouds, casting a golden hue over the Westchester estate.

Director Vance’s sudden, unannounced disappearance during an overseas trip sent shockwaves through the federal apparatus, completely neutralizing the political shielding that had protected the remaining syndicate rivals. Without Vance or Salvatore holding the reins of corruption, the entire opposition crumbled overnight.

Down in the lower holding cells, Salvatore Rizzi stared blankly at the small portable television screen mounted outside his glass partition. The news broadcast detailed the sudden collapse of the federal investigation and the sweeping resignations within the Department of Justice.

Sal slowly slid down the plexiglass wall until he hit the cold floor, the final, fragile threads of his grand design snapping completely. He had lost.

Elena pulled a tray of warm pastries from the oven, her heart feeling lighter than it had in twenty-five years. Her father’s name was cleared. Her future was secure. And the dark, terrifying world that had once threatened to swallow her family whole had finally been brought to heel.

The heavy front doors unlocked, and heavy, familiar footsteps echoed across the marble foyer.

Elena dropped the oven mitts and rushed out into the hallway.

Adrian stood by the console table, shedding his heavy wool coat. He looked tired, bruised from the escape, but his eyes were alive with an absolute, unshakable warmth.

Before she could speak, Adrian crossed the distance between them and pulled her into his arms, burying his face in her hair.
