Chapter 11 - The Weight of Whispers

The morning mist clung stubbornly to the iron gates of the Moretti estate, mimicking the chill that had settled into Elena’s bones. Six months had passed since the night the ledger was recovered and Salvatore Rizzi was cast into the lower holding cells. To the outside world, Adrian Moretti was a reformed tycoon, successfully transitioning his empire into fully legitimate global logistics. But inside the mansion walls, ghosts did not vanish easily.

Elena stood by the tall arched window of the master suite, watching three-year-old Mia chase a golden retriever puppy across the manicured lawn. The little girl’s laughter floated up, sweet and unburdened, a stark contrast to the heavy silence lingering behind her in the room.

Adrian stood by the fireplace, his broad shoulders tense beneath a dark cashmere sweater. He was staring at an encrypted laptop screen displaying a string of encrypted data packets originating from an offshore server in Zurich.

“It’s happening again, isn't it?” Elena asked quietly, not turning around.

Adrian looked up, his gray-green eyes hardening. “Sal had a contingency. Even locked away behind three feet of reinforced concrete, his network is trying to ping our secondary routing terminals. He thinks he can bleed us from the inside.”

“Then let him try,” Elena said, her voice dropping all hesitation as she turned to face him. “We didn't survive my uncle Marcus and a basement shootout just to cower at a computer glitch. If Sal wants a war from a cage, show him what happens when a wolf stops playing nice.”

Adrian stared at her, the corners of his mouth twitching upward into a rare, grim smile. He crossed the room in two strides, pulling her into his arms. “You never cease to amaze me, Elena.”
