Chapter 18 - The Paper Airplane PilotThree weeks later, the sprawling lawns of the Westchester estate were alive with the bright, cheerful sounds of childhood.

The heavy iron security gates remained wide open, welcoming the world in. The estate was no longer a fortress of fear; it was a home.
In the center of the manicured back garden, a long wooden picnic table was set up for Mia’s fourth birthday party. Colorful balloons danced in the crisp breeze, and a cluster of children ran around playing tag near the flower beds.
Adrian stood near the edge of the patio, wearing a crisp white button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, holding a freshly folded paper airplane.
Beside him, Elena leaned against the railing, sipping lemonade with a peaceful smile.
“Are you sure you mastered the aerodynamics of this one, Mr. Moretti?” she teased softly.
Adrian raised an eyebrow, a playful smirk touching his lips. “I run a multi-billion-dollar global logistics network, Elena. I think I can handle a piece of notebook paper.”
Just then, little Mia came running over, her pink dress swirling around her knees, holding her battered brown teddy bear in one hand and pointing eagerly at the sky with the other.
“Adrian! Is it ready? Does it fly all the way to the oak tree?” she demanded excitedly.
Adrian knelt down on one knee, bringing himself eye-level with the little girl, his gray-green eyes shining with a profound, unconditional love that he had spent decades denying himself.
“Watch closely, pilot,” Adrian said, pulling his arm back.
With a smooth, practiced flick of his wrist, he launched the paper airplane into the autumn air.
It caught a sudden gust of wind, dipped slightly, and then soared upward, cutting a clean, graceful arc high above the lawn before landing gently near the base of the massive oak tree.
Mia shrieked with absolute delight, clapping her hands and jumping up and down. “You did it! You’re the best builder in the whole world!”

Adrian stood up, sweeping the little girl effortlessly into his arms and tossing her into the air as she giggled uncontrollably. He caught her, pulling her close against his chest as Elena stepped forward, slipping her hand smoothly into his free hand.
The sun dipped lower behind the horizon, casting a brilliant, warm amber light across the entire estate. The shadows of the past were gone, replaced by a future they had carved out together—unbroken, unyielding, and finally, at peace.
