Chapter 12 - The Secret Ledger

Deep within the financial district, inside a dimly lit office lined with mahogany bookshelves and expensive leather furniture, Harrison Vance poured himself a glass of aged bourbon. His career as the Hamilton family’s chief legal counsel had suffered a catastrophic blow. Following the public exposure of Margaret’s corruption, his firm had dropped him, his high-net-worth clients had fled, and his name had become a punchline in legal circles.

He stared at a thick, leather-bound ledger resting on his desk—a document Margaret had trusted him to hide years ago. It contained the names of offshore accounts, bribed judges, and compromised officials who had helped the Hamilton empire bury corporate scandals for decades.

"You ruined everything, Margaret," Vance muttered, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. "You thought you could throw me under the bus when the walls caved in? You underestimated how much dirt I kept for myself."

Vance opened the ledger to a marked page. It detailed a network of hidden shell corporations that still held millions of dollars in untraced assets—money that Margaret had illegally stripped from her late daughter-in-law’s estate. If the authorities found this ledger, Margaret would never see the light of day again. But if he controlled it, he could blackmail the remaining Hamilton assets, reclaim his prestige, and destroy Clara Miller once and for all.

He picked up his secure satellite phone and dialed a encrypted number. After three rings, a harsh, raspy voice answered on the other end.

"It’s Vance," the attorney said, his voice dropping to a cold whisper. "The game isn't over yet. We have a counter-strike to plan, and Clara Miller is going to be the first casualty."
