Chapter 23 - The Hidden Vault

Guided by the cryptic coordinate notes in her father’s journal, Clara and Adam descended into the deepest sublevels of the Hamilton estate—areas that hadn't been accessed in over forty years. Armed with heavy-duty flashlights and a portable digital scanner, they navigated the damp, stone-lined corridors beneath the mansion's foundation.
"According to my father's notes," Clara said, sweeping her flashlight beam across a bricked-off archway, "there was an old secondary office behind the wine cellar that was sealed off shortly after his death."
Adam stepped up to the wall. He knocked his knuckles against the gray masonry. A hollow, echoing sound reverberated back. "It's a false partition. Behind here is an old sub-chamber."
Working together, they used a heavy iron crowbar from the maintenance kit to pry away the crumbling mortar and aged bricks. As the final barrier gave way, a rush of stale, trapped air escaped into the corridor.
Clara stepped through the opening, sweeping her light across the dusty interior. It was a preserved time capsule of the 1980s. A mahogany desk sat covered in dust, surrounded by filing cabinets and steel lockboxes. But what caught their attention immediately was a heavy, wall-mounted safe bearing the Hamilton family crest.
"This is it," Adam whispered, stepping inside. "The original estate vault. My mother told me it was destroyed during a basement renovation fire in the nineties."
Clara walked over to the desk. Lying neatly on top of the blotter was a brass combination dial engraved with a series of numbers matching the date of her grandfather's death. With trembling fingers, Clara entered the sequence.
