Chapter 4 - The Voice of the Innocent

A collective gasp sucked all the oxygen out of the courtroom. Flashbulbs exploded like rapid-fire lightning as dozens of press photographers spun around, capturing the unbelievable sight of the missing Hamilton heir standing in the middle of a felony trial.

"Idan!" Adam cried out, jumping to his feet, knocking his chair over with a sharp clatter.

Margaret froze, her face draining of all color until she looked like a marble statue carved from pure ice. Her sharp eyes darted from her grandson to Clara, a sudden, primal panic flickering beneath her aristocratic composure.

Idan didn't run to his father. He didn't look at his grandmother. His small, tear-streaked eyes locked entirely onto Clara. Without hesitation, he broke past the startled bailiff, sprinted down the center aisle, and threw his arms around Clara’s waist, burying his face in her coat.

"Clara! I found it! I saved you!" the boy sobbed, his small frame shaking.

Clara dropped to her knees, wrapping her arms around him, burying her face in his messy hair as tears finally broke free from her dam of restraint. "Idan... what are you doing here? You shouldn't be here, sweet boy..."

"Order! Order in the courtroom!" Judge Vance banged his gavel repeatedly, the loud cracks reverberating through the stunned silence. "Bailiff, remove the child from the courtroom immediately! This is an absolute circus!"

"No! Wait!" Adam shouted, pushing his way through the barrier, his paternal panic overriding his usual subservience to his mother. He reached his son and knelt beside Clara, his voice breaking. "Idan, son, look at me. How did you get here? Where have you been all night?"

Idan pulled back, wiping his nose with the sleeve of his sweater. He unzipped his mud-stained backpack with trembling fingers. He didn't pull out a toy or a change of clothes. Instead, he reached deep inside and pulled out a heavy, velvet-lined leather pouch, dropping it onto the defense table right in front of Clara and Leo.

The room held its breath.

Idan unclasped the pouch and tipped it forward. Sliding out onto the polished wood with a dull, heavy thud was the legendary Hamilton Sapphire—the multi-million-dollar heirloom that Clara was supposedly on trial for stealing.

"I didn't let her take it," Idan declared, his clear, childish voice ringing out bravely across the silent courtroom. "Clara didn't steal it, Dad. Grandma lied."
