Chapter 6 - Pandora's Box

Two hours later, the scene inside the private study of the Hamilton mansion resembled a crime thriller. Two police detectives, accompanied by Leo and a court-appointed magistrate, stood before the antique display cabinet.

Margaret sat rigidly in a velvet armchair, her hands clawing into the fabric, her face pale and pinched. Adam stood behind her, his arms crossed, a silent sentinel of justice. Clara and Idan waited in the hallway, shielded from the immediate tension, though Idan refused to let go of Clara's hand.

"We have the combination provided by Mr. Hamilton," lead Detective Vance (no relation to the attorney) announced, spinning the heavy dial. Click, click, clack.

The heavy iron door swung wide open.

Inside, the detectives began systematically cataloging the contents. They pulled out tax documents, offshore bank account records, and insurance policies. But it was a small, locked metal lockbox at the very bottom of the safe that caught the detective's attention.

"What is this?" the detective asked, holding up a small brass key he had found hanging behind a portrait on the wall.

Margaret lunged forward with surprising speed, her composure finally shattering completely. "Don't touch that! That is private! You have no right—"

Two officers gently but firmly restrained her back into the armchair. The detective slid the key into the lockbox and popped the latch. He lifted the lid and pulled out a stack of documents and a USB flash drive.

Adam stepped forward, peering over the detective's shoulder. He picked up the top document and scanned the lines. As he read, the color drained entirely from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse.

"What is this, Mother?" Adam whispered, his voice trembling with a dark, rising fury. "What are these papers?"

Margaret turned her face away, refusing to speak, her lips pressed into a hard, white line.

Leo, who had been granted permission to observe as legal counsel for Clara, stepped closer and read over Adam's shoulder. The young intern's eyes widened in sheer disbelief.

"These aren't just insurance fraud documents," Leo said, his voice echoing in the silent study. "These are transfer deeds. Your mother has been systematically draining your late wife's personal inheritance trust for the past five years, funneling millions into offshore accounts under shell corporations. And look at this..."

Leo pulled out another paper. "This is a police report from six years ago. The disappearance of your wife’s engagement ring—the real one. Your mother reported it stolen by a former maid who was mysteriously fired the exact same week. She collected a massive insurance payout on it, just like she tried to do with Clara."

The room fell into a dead, suffocating silence. Adam looked down at his mother, the illusion of her infallibility shattering into a million irreparable pieces. She wasn't just a cold, strict matriarch. She was a criminal, a thief, and a master manipulator who had framed innocent people for her own greed.

"You framed her," Adam said, his voice dropping an octave, heavy with a rage so deep it terrified even the detectives. "You framed Clara because you wanted the insurance payout to cover your stock market losses, and you knew Clara was an easy target because she was poor."

Margaret finally looked up, her eyes flashing with venomous defiance. "They are servants, Adam! They are disposable! I built this family empire out of dirt and blood, while you and your weak-willed father nearly ruined it! I did what had to be done!"

"It's over, Mother," Adam said quietly, turning his back on her. He walked out into the hallway, where Clara was waiting. He fell to his knees in front of her once more, tears finally spilling over his cheeks.
