Chapter 22 - The Journal of Secrets

Clara carefully unfolded a yellowed, fragile piece of paper from her father's journal. The handwriting was neat, disciplined, but unmistakably trembling.

“May 14, 1985,” Clara read aloud, her voice barely a whisper in the quiet study. “The mistress grows more paranoid by the day. She hides her financial indiscretions behind closed doors, blaming staff for missing inventory that she herself mismanaged. I fear for anyone who stands in her way. If the truth of what happened to the first estate manager ever comes to light, the foundation of this house will crumble.”

Adam leaned closer, his expression darkening as he read the words over her shoulder. "My grandfather died under mysterious circumstances before I was even born," Adam said, his voice laced with sudden tension. "The official report always said it was a sudden heart attack in his study. But my mother... she never let anyone speak of him."

"It wasn't a heart attack," Clara said, her eyes tracing another line further down the page. "Listen to this: 'I saw her tampering with his medication ledger tonight. She wants absolute control of the corporate trust, no matter who stands in her way.' My father knew, Adam. That’s why he was quietly dismissed and threatened into silence all those years ago."

The revelation hung heavily in the air. The trial had exposed Margaret's insurance fraud and her plot against Clara, but this journal opened a Pandora's box of far more sinister historical crimes—crimes that could completely dismantle the remaining legitimate standing of the old guard who had supported Margaret for decades.

"We need to take this to the federal prosecutor immediately," Adam said, his jaw tight. "If my grandfather was murdered, my mother’s crimes aren't just financial fraud. They run into premeditated homicide."

"Wait," Clara cautioned, placing a hand on his arm. "If we move too fast, the remaining corporate loyalists tied to her old network will try to bury this just like they did forty years ago. We need undeniable physical proof, not just old diary entries."

"Then we dig," Adam declared, determination flashing in his eyes. "Every brick, every document, every skeleton in this house is coming out into the light."
