Chapter 10 - The Last Plate

"Daddy?"
The voice was older than the memory I had carried for two years, but the cadence, the pitch, the exact cadence of the word hit me like a physical blow to the chest.
I couldn't breathe. My legs felt like lead. I took one step forward, then another, until I was kneeling on the floor in front of her.
Lily—older, taller, but with the exact same dark curls and fierce, intelligent eyes—stared down at me. Clara had hidden her safely in a secure federal safehouse two states away, waiting for the exact moment Victor's empire collapsed before bringing her home.
"You're real," I whispered, my voice breaking for the first time in two decades as tears finally spilled over my lashes and traced down my face.
Lily didn't wait. She dropped to her knees right beside me, wrapping her small arms tightly around my neck, burying her face in my shoulder just like she used to do every single night before the world turned to ash.
"Mommy told me you were looking for me," she whispered into my ear. "She said you never stopped."
Behind us, the federal agents quietly filed out, leaving the penthouse bathed in the quiet, golden glow of the city skyline.
An hour later, back at the mansion beneath the massive crystal chandelier, the dining table was no longer set for one.
Three plates sat gleaming under the lights.
Amara sat on one side, happily munching on a dinner roll, kicking her little legs against the chair. Lily sat directly across from me, her hand resting over mine on the mahogany wood.
And Clara stood nearby, smiling softly as she poured a fresh glass of water.

I looked at the empty chair beside me—the one nobody had touched in two years. I reached out, pulled it closer to mine, and smiled.
For the first time in a very long time, the Boss wasn't eating alone.
