Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Ledger

"Victor Thorne."

The name dropped into the silence like a live grenade.

Victor Thorne. My closest partner. The man who had stood beside me at charity galas, who had helped me consolidate my shipping empire, who had poured whiskey into my glass and wept with me the morning Lily disappeared, telling me that we would find the bastards together.

"You're lying," I snarled, my voice dropping an octave into a terrifying, dead calm. I grabbed Clara by the arm and hauled her to her feet with one hand, ignoring the way she gasped in pain. "Victor was my brother in everything but blood. When the police had nothing, Victor hired private security teams out of his own pocket. He spent weeks living in this house, making sure I ate, making sure I didn't blow my own brains out with a revolver."

"That's why he was here!" Clara sobbed, dangling slightly from my grip before I let her go, shoving her back a step. "He wasn't comforting you, Julian—he was managing you! He was watching to see if your grief would make you look in the right places. He orchestrated the whole thing!"

I turned away, pacing toward the massive floor-to-ceiling windows that looked out over the sprawling city lights of downtown. My mind raced, clawing through years of transactions, joint ventures, and whispered agreements. It couldn't be true. Victor didn't have the stomach for it; he was the finance guy, the numbers man, the corporate face of an empire built on shadows.

Or so I had always believed.

"Prove it," I said without turning around.

"I can't prove it with police evidence," Clara said, her breathing steadying slightly as she clutched Amara to her chest. "The police belong to him—or at least, enough of them do. But I can prove it with what's hidden in this very house."

I spun back around. "What are you talking about?"

"When I came back—when I finally dared to crawl out of hiding and get close to you again—I didn't apply to be your housekeeper by accident," Clara confessed, her eyes locking onto mine with fierce, desperate loyalty. "I knew Victor still had eyes on you. I knew he was still stealing from your secondary accounts, slowly bleeding your empire dry while waiting for you to sign over full proxy rights to the shipping lines. I came here to find the backup ledger. The one Lily's mother kept before she..." Clara hesitated, biting her lip. "Before she died."

My heart hammered against my ribs. "Lily's mother died in childbirth."

"That's what Victor told you," Clara whispered, dropping the final bomb. "She didn't die at the hospital, Julian. She was smuggled out of the delivery room the night Lily was born because she found out what Victor and your syndicate were really laundering through your shipping docks. She hid evidence in a safety deposit box, and she left the key... right inside Lily's favorite music box."
