Chapter 18 - The Geneva Accord

The Vance Financial Tower was a fortress of glass, steel, and high-tech biometric security. To reach Alistair Vance’s private penthouse suite on the forty-fifth floor, one had to bypass three layers of retinal scanners, encrypted elevator lifts, and armed private guards trained in close-quarters combat.

We didn't use the elevator.

Under the cover of a thick, rolling Alpine fog at midnight, my security team rappelled down the sheer glass exterior of the tower from the roof, cutting through the high-frequency seismic sensors with a thermal glass-cutter.

I stepped through the shattered balcony doors of the penthouse, my boots clicking softly against the polished parquet floor.

Alistair Vance sat behind a massive walnut desk, a glass of vintage scotch in his hand, looking out over the glittering lights of Lake Zurich. He didn't even turn around when the glass shattered.

"You're late, Victor," Alistair said smoothly, swirling his drink without looking back. "I expected your call hours ago regarding the American senate committee."

"Victor won't be calling," I said, my voice echoing off the minimalist walls.

Alistair froze. He slowly turned his chair around, his eyes widening in absolute shock as he looked at me—and then at Clara, who stepped out from the shadows behind me, holding a encrypted terminal displaying every single wire transfer he had sent to Victor over the last decade.

"Clara?" Alistair whispered, standing up so fast his chair screeched against the floor. "You're... you're supposed to be dead. And you—you're Julian Hale."

"The very same," I walked forward, placing both hands flat on his walnut desk and leaning in close. "You've been playing a very dangerous game across two continents, Alistair. Using your brother's presumed death to cover your European money-laundering ring."

Alistair’s face hardened, the panic vanishing beneath a cold, aristocratic veneer. He reached slowly toward the mahogany drawer of his desk. "You think walking into my tower with a few thugs gives you power here, Mr. Hale? This is Switzerland. My security is already locking down the building. You'll never leave this room alive."

"Your security isn't locking down anything," a calm voice echoed from the private elevator doors behind him.

The heavy steel doors slid open with a soft chime. Standing inside the car was a lean, silver-haired man wearing a tailored gray suit—a man whose face matched the family portraits in Clara’s memory, but older, weathered by years of hiding in plain sight.

Arthur Vance.

Alistair dropped his hand from the drawer, stumbling backward until his legs hit the edge of his desk. "Arthur... no. That's impossible. I watched your plane go down!"

"You tried to kill me, Alistair," Arthur said, walking slowly into the penthouse, his eyes locked onto his brother with cold, righteous fury. "But you forgot one thing: an accountant always keeps a duplicate ledger."
