Chapter 15 - The Return to the Empire

By evening, we were back in New York.

The media had already caught wind of the story. Headlines across every major financial network screamed with the downfall of Senator Erickson and the dismantling of the multinational syndicate that had operated in the shadows of the shipping industry for decades. But the public didn't know the half of it. They didn't know about the private war fought across mahogany tables and midnight runways. They only knew that Julian Hale—the elusive 'Boss'—had emerged from the wreckage stronger, untouchable, and completely vindicated.

I walked through the double oak doors of my mansion, tossing my coat to a guard.

The house felt different tonight. The oppressive shadows that had haunted the hallways for two years had been scrubbed clean by the sound of genuine laughter echoing from the dining room.

I walked down the hall and stopped at the doorway.

Lily and Amara were sitting at the massive dining table, covered from head to toe in flour and powdered sugar, while Clara stood over them laughing, trying to rescue a batch of poorly shaped cookies they were attempting to bake.

Lily looked up, her dark curls bouncing as she saw me standing in the doorway.

"Daddy!" she shouted, abandoning the flour bowl and running across the marble floor, throwing her arms around my waist.

I dropped to one knee, wrapping my arms around her, burying my face in her hair. The cold, hard shell I had worn like armor for two years finally melted away completely.

Clara walked over, wiping her flour-dusted hands on her apron, a soft, understanding smile on her face. "You look tired, Mr. Hale."

"Julian," I corrected gently, standing up with Lily still perched on my hip.

Clara’s smile widened. "Julian. Dinner will be ready in an hour. And this time... we aren't eating alone."
