Chapter 9 - Checkmate

Victor stared at the little girl, his jaw dropping so low it looked unhinged. "No... that's impossible. That's not—"
"That's not Lily," I said, finally pushing the guards off my back and standing up, dusting off my coat. "That's Clara’s daughter, Amara. The little girl you threatened two years ago to keep Clara silent. The little girl who walked into my dining room tonight and delivered a thumb drive straight into my hands while you were busy watching your little red camera feeds."
Victor spun around toward the air vents, suddenly realizing the truth. "The bug... you knew?"
"I knew the moment Clara told me you were listening," I walked slowly toward him, the terrifying aura of the 'Boss' returning in full, crushing force. "You thought you were broadcasting to an empty room, Victor. But while you were listening to me pretend to despair, Clara’s thumb drive was busy downloading every single encrypted transaction from your primary server straight to the federal prosecutor's cloud database."
The federal agents moved in, slapping heavy steel cuffs onto Victor’s wrists. He thrashed and screamed as they dragged him toward the elevator, his high-class facade completely shattered into screaming, pathetic hysteria.
"You can't do this!" Victor shrieked as the doors closed around him. "I'll own you! I'll—!"
The doors shut, cutting off his voice.
The penthouse grew quiet, save for the hum of the city lights below and the soft, steady breathing of the federal agents securing the perimeter.
I turned around.
Clara stood near the entrance, holding Amara, her eyes swimming with tears of pure, unadulterated relief.

And then, from behind Clara, another figure stepped out of the private elevator vestibule—a young woman wrapped in a heavy winter coat, her face pale, her eyes wide with a fear mixed with overwhelming recognition.
I froze. The world stopped spinning entirely.
