Chapter 2 - The Face in the Shadows

The guards outside the double doors shifted. I could hear the faint scuff of their leather boots against the parquet hallway, oblivious to the emotional earthquake happening twenty feet away. I didn't call them in. Not yet.

"Clara Vance," I tested the name on my tongue, watching her cower. "The private pediatric nurse who vanished off the grid the exact same week my daughter was taken. The police searched for you for six months. They assumed you were either an accomplice or a victim tossed into the harbor."

"I ran because they were going to kill me," Clara cried, pressing her forehead against the cold marble. "Not you, Mr. Hale—the others. The people you were doing business with. You thought your empire was invincible, that your underground deals couldn't touch your family. But you were wrong. They used your daughter to send you a message, and I was supposed to be the collateral damage."

Amara whimpered, finally sensing the deep, jagged pain in the room, and buried her face in her mother's shoulder.

I stood up. The massive mahogany chair scraped loudly against the floor. I walked around the length of the table, my footsteps echoing in the cavernous room, and stopped a few feet away from where she knelt. I looked down at her. The anger that usually fueled my blood was warring with a cold, hollow dread.

"If you were there," I said slowly, "why didn't you stop them? Why didn't you scream?"

"I tried!" Clara screamed back, her voice cracking with raw, defensive agony. She pulled back her collar, tearing the fabric of her modest blouse to the side.

I stopped breathing.

Tracing a jagged, silvery keloid scar that wound from her collarbone up toward her jawline was the unmistakable mark of a silenced pistol barrel pressed directly into flesh—followed by a blade.

"They caught me in the hallway," Clara whispered, her voice dropping to a haunted rasp. "They put a gun to my head and told me that if I made a single sound, they would drop Amara—who was an infant then, hidden in my apartment across town—into the river. They took Lily right past me, Mr. Hale. I watched them carry her out the window while a man held a knife to my throat. And the worst part? Before he knocked me unconscious, the man whispered a name into my ear. A name you know very well."

My fists clenched so tightly my nails broke the skin of my palms. "Whose name?"

Clara looked up, tears streaking her dirt-smudged face, and spoke a single, impossible word that shattered every illusion I had spent two years building.
