Chapter 14 - The Encryption Key

A rhythmic beep echoed from the phone speaker. After two rings, a crisp, electronic voice answered from deep within the server room back at my mansion in New York.
“Primary decryption sequence initiated. Welcome back, Mr. Hale.”
Senator Erickson’s cup slipped from his fingers, shattering against the stone pavers, dark coffee splashing across his clean leather shoes.
"What... what is that?" Erickson stammered, his calm facade finally cracking into raw panic.
"That is the secondary decryption protocol," I said, sliding the phone back into my pocket. "Arthur Vance wasn't just a forensic accountant, Senator. Before he faked his death, he spent three years reverse-engineering the encryption algorithms used by your congressional committee's offshore accounts. Last night, while your men were trying to burn my front door down, my terminal was automatically dumping every transaction, offshore wire transfer, and signed contract straight to the Department of Justice's public registry."
"You... you didn't," Erickson whispered, color draining entirely from his face.
"Check your tablet, Senator," I nodded toward the small glass table beside him.
Erickson lunged for the table, grabbing his iPad with trembling fingers. He tapped the screen, opening his secure communications portal. The screen was flashing a relentless wave of crimson notifications: ACCOUNT FROZEN. ASSETS SEIZED. FEDERAL INDICTMENT ISSUED UNDER RICO ACT.

He looked up at me, his eyes wide, hollow, and filled with absolute terror. "You've destroyed us all."
"No, Senator," I said, turning my back on him as the federal marshals stepped forward, cold steel cuffs gleaming in the morning light. "We've only just begun."
