Chapter 13 - The Rotten CoreHank hesitated for three agonizing seconds, his jaw working furiously on his toothpick. Then, cursing under his breath, he pulled a heavy brass key ring off his belt and unlocked the reinforced steel door of Sector B.

A wave of warm, stagnant air rushed out, carrying the faint, sickening sweet smell of spoiling protein.
I flicked on my heavy-duty flashlight and stepped inside. The rows of towering pallet racks were packed with commercial crates of poultry and dairy, but the frost lines along the ceiling coils were completely dry. The digital control panel on the wall had been manually overridden with a physical jumper wire—a crude, dangerous trick used to fake temperature readings while the actual refrigeration compressors were turned off to save on electricity costs.
"You turned off the primary grid to pad your quarterly efficiency bonuses," I said, shining my flashlight directly into Hank’s sweating face.
"We had to!" Hank defended himself, his voice raising in panic. "The power rates spiked, and Caleb's old contracts didn't cover the energy hikes! If we didn't throttle the chillers at night, our profit margins would've dropped to zero, and Meridian Holdings would have stripped our franchise license!"
"You didn't save money, Hank. You gambled with public health," I said, pulling out my tablet to log the violations. "Every single crate in this sector is compromised. It’s going to be dumped, and your facility is suspended from the Silver Pine network effective immediately."
Before Hank could lunge or protest, my phone buzzed violently in my pocket.
It wasn't Arthur. It was an urgent alert from the corporate security gateway at headquarters.
“Warning: Unauthorized remote intrusion detected on the main cold-storage server mainframe. Encryption keys accessed from an external IP address linked to Meridian Holdings.”

My blood ran cold. Hank wasn't just a rogue floor manager running a local scam; he was a distraction.
While I was out here inspecting a single warehouse in the middle of nowhere, someone was actively wiping the primary database at Silver Pine headquarters to destroy the remaining financial evidence linking Meridian Holdings to Caleb’s illegal slush funds.
