Chapter 22 - Shadows of the PastDespite our institutional victories, ghosts still lingered in the corners of the industry.

Word had spread across the regional trade networks about how a broke, blacklisted single dad had dismantled the Silver Pine corporate machine from the bottom up. Suddenly, my phone was ringing with interview requests from trade magazines, industrial engineering journals, and national news syndicates.
I turned them all down. I didn't want to be a media icon; I wanted to be an engineer who kept the cold-storage units running.
However, one message caught my attention. It was an email from an old colleague named Marcus—a senior HVAC specialist who had worked with me at my very first firm thirteen years ago, before I ever stepped foot inside Silver Pine.
“Owen, I hear what you did down south. It’s legendary. But you need to watch your back. Word on the supply-chain grapevine is that Meridian Holdings wasn’t just a rogue front for Caleb. They were a shell company for a larger national consortium—one that’s still buying up failing cold-storage facilities across the Midwest under different names. They haven't given up on the market share you locked down.”

I stared at the screen, my coffee growing cold on the desk. The corporate hydra had many heads. Cut off one, and others would eventually sprout in the dark.
I forwarded Marcus’s email directly to Arthur and Detective Vance, adding a single sentence: “Let’s expand our radar.”
