Chapter 27 - Ruby’s Ninth BirthdayAutumn returned with crisp, golden leaves tumbling across the sprawling lawns of the Kesler estate.

Ruby’s ninth birthday party was held in the newly planted yellow rose garden outside our home—a permanent tribute to the day our lives had changed forever outside that freezing corner café.

There were no suits, no corporate lawyers, and no flashing news cameras. Just a few close friends, a homemade chocolate cake baked by Beatrice herself (who had quietly mastered the art of domestic pastry-making late in life), and a circle of laughing kids running through the grass.

Ruby blew out the nine flickering candles on her cake in a single, mighty breath, while everyone cheered.

As she sliced the first piece of cake, she walked over and handed it directly to Beatrice, then turned to me with a bright, gap-toothed grin.

"Dad," she whispered loudly, tugging on my sleeve. "Do you remember when we only had eighteen dollars and sixty cents?"

I knelt down to her eye level, brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead. "I remember every single cent, sweetie."

"I'm glad we shared our breakfast with that old lady," Ruby said thoughtfully, glancing over at Beatrice, who was smiling warmly as she watched us. "If we didn't, we wouldn't have our garden, and you wouldn't be fixing the whole world's refrigerators."

"Well," I chuckled softly, resting my hand on her shoulder. "The refrigerators were just the starting point. The world is a big place, Ruby. But as long as we stick together, the foundation is always level."
