Chapter 14 - The Digital Counter-Attack"Hank, lock the doors," I ordered sharply, sprinting back toward my car.

"What? Where are you going?!" Hank shouted.

"To save your franchise from going bankrupt," I yelled back, slamming the car door and turning the ignition key with a vicious twist.

I threw the sedan into reverse, kicking up a rooster tail of gravel, and tore out of the Tri-City parking lot onto the interstate highway. My foot pressed hard against the gas pedal, the engine screaming as I pushed ninety miles per hour toward Silver Pine Tower downtown.

While driving with one hand, I used my other hand to patch my burner phone directly into Arthur’s secure satellite frequency.

"Arthur! Talk to me! What’s happening on the mainframe?" I yelled over the rush of wind howling through my cracked window.

"It’s a remote sweep, Owen!" Arthur’s voice came through the speaker, strained and frantic amid a background symphony of clacking computer keys. "Someone with root-level administrator credentials—credentials we haven't revoked yet—is executing a cascading script to wipe the financial transaction logs between Silver Pine and Meridian Holdings!"

"Can you isolate the node?"

"I'm trying, but they've routed the ping through twelve different proxy servers across three continents!" Arthur panted. "If they complete the wipe, we lose the paper trail before the federal grand jury indicts the remaining conspirators next week!"

"Don't let them wipe the core backup," I commanded. "Execute an emergency offline snapshot. Pull the physical hard drives from the server room basement if you have to!"

"I'm locked out of the primary console!" Arthur shouted over the line. "The system administrator override requires dual biometric verification—my thumbprint and an executive board member's override key!"

"Where is Beatrice?"

"She's at the regional charity gala downtown, completely surrounded by press!"

"Call her detail," I said, my teeth clenched as I navigated a sharp highway curve at eighty-five. "Tell her I'm five minutes away. Keep those drives from formatting, Arthur. I'm coming in through the basement."
