Chapter 13 - The Retraction"Where... where did you get this?" Thaddius stammered, the plastic receiver shaking in his grip. The arrogant mask had completely evaporated, replaced by raw, primal panic.

"Your mother left a parting gift," I lied smoothly, watching him sweat. "She realized during her interrogation that you were planning to throw her under the bus first. So she handed over the master decryption keys to your personal offshore ledger. Every single dollar keeping your fancy prison lawyer on retainer is about to be seized by the DOJ."
"She wouldn't..." Thaddius breathed, his chest heaving. "She’s my mother!"
"She’s a Vanguard, Thaddius. Survival is the only family value they ever truly practiced," I replied, standing up smoothly and smoothing down my blazer. "You have twenty-four hours to drop your contestation against the Sanctuary. If you don't, I’ll personally make sure the federal prosecutor adds racketeering charges to your file, ensuring you spend the next thirty years sharing a cell with people who don't care about your aristocratic last name."
"Wait! Mave, wait!" he shouted, slamming his fist against the plexiglass as the guard stepped forward to grab his shoulder. "Mave, don't do this! We can talk! Mave—!"
I didn't look back. I turned on my heel and walked out of the visitation room, leaving the iron doors to slam shut behind me with finality.

The Sanctuary was officially, permanently mine.
