Chapter 4 - The Midnight RendezvousThe midnight wind swept through the manicured gardens of Vanguard Manor, carrying the sharp scent of damp earth and impending doom. I slipped out of the ground-floor French doors, moving like a ghost across the lawn. My body still ached, every step a reminder of the vacuum inside me where my babies should have been, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the white-hot adrenaline driving me forward.

Detective Vance was waiting in an unmarked sedan parked just beyond the perimeter of the estate's security cameras. I pulled open the passenger door and slid into the warmth of the car, slamming it shut behind me.

Vance looked at me, his eyes sweeping over my pale face and the dark circles under my eyes. There was no pity in his expression—only grim, professional respect.

"You realize what you're handing over, Mrs. Vanguard?" Vance asked, tapping his finger against a sleek flash drive I had slid across the console. "If this audio log is authentic—if it wasn't doctored—this isn't just an assault case. This is first-degree conspiracy to commit murder, tied directly to a multi-million-dollar corporate fraud scheme."

"It’s authentic," I said steadily. "I coded the network architecture myself. The system doesn't lie, Detective. And neither do I."

"Why didn't you give this to me at the hospital?" he pressed, his gaze piercing.

"Because at the hospital, I was a grieving patient with no leverage," I replied, turning to face him fully. "Here, inside their fortress, I was able to gather the remaining pieces. Elena Vance isn't just Thaddius’s mistress; she’s Vesper’s financial proxy. Every illegal offshore transfer, every corporate bribe used to secure the Henderson merger flows through accounts managed by Elena. If you want to take down Vesper Vanguard, you don't just arrest her for pushing a pregnant woman down the stairs—you tear down her entire empire piece by piece."

Vance let out a low whistle, shaking his head. "You're playing a dangerous game, Mave. If Thaddius or Vesper catches wind of this before we secure the search warrants, you won't just lose your babies—they’ll make sure you disappear permanently."

"Let them try," I whispered, a dark, fierce edge to my tone. "They've already taken everything that mattered to me. I have nothing left to lose. But they have an entire dynasty to burn."

"Alright," Vance said, inserting the flash drive into his laptop. A series of green diagnostic lines scrolled across the screen. "I’m submitting an emergency affidavit to a judge I trust—one who isn't on the Vanguard payroll. We execute the search and arrest warrants tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM, right in the middle of the quarterly board meeting. Everyone will be there: Vesper, Thaddius, and your dear friend Elena."

"Make sure media crews are notified," I added coldly. "If the Vanguard family is going to fall, the whole world is going to watch them hit the pavement."
