Chapter 8 - The Ghost of Vanguard ManorTwo weeks later, I stood alone on the second-floor landing of Vanguard Manor.

The house was completely empty. All of Vesper’s antique furniture, priceless art collections, and ostentatious displays of wealth had been seized by federal marshals and auctioned off to pay back creditors. The halls echoed with silence—a clean, cleansing silence.

I walked slowly down the stairs, placing my hand gently against the polished wooden banister where Vesper’s cold hands had pushed me months ago. The physical scars on my body had faded, but the inner transformation was permanent. I wasn't the timid, quiet wife who had walked into this house three years ago, hoping to earn the approval of a family that viewed humans as disposable currency.

My burner phone buzzed in my pocket. It was an email from Marcus.

“The piece is running as front-page lead across every major syndicate today. Title: ‘The House of Cinders: How Mave Vanguard Brought Down an Empire.’ You’ve got three book offers and a standing invitation to speak at the National Coalition Against Domestic and Corporate Abuse. What’s your move?”

I stared at the screen, smiling faintly.

I replied with a single sentence: “Tell them I’m just getting started.”

As I reached the bottom of the stairs, I heard a car pulling up outside through the tall arched windows. I walked to the front door and pulled it open, letting the crisp autumn wind rush into the foyer, sweeping away the last lingering ghosts of the Vanguard legacy.
