Chapter 17 - The AmbushThe video recording captured every incriminating word: Elena detailing the corporate conspiracy, Viktor confirming the illegal wiretaps, and the specific fake corporate entity they were using to bypass federal asset-freeze laws.

I had everything I needed.

I backed away slowly, my shoes clicking softly against a stray piece of gravel.

Clack.

The sound was tiny, but in the dead silence of the alleyway, it might as well have been a gunshot.

Inside the van, the voices cut off instantly. The interior light flickered on.

"Someone's outside," Viktor barked.

I didn't hesitate. I turned and sprinted toward my car, pushing my legs as fast as they could carry me.

"Hey! Stop right there!" Viktor roared, the side door of the van sliding open with a violent metallic crash.

Heavy footsteps pounded against the pavement behind me. I reached my sedan, yanked the door open, threw myself inside, and punched the ignition button just as a heavy fist slammed against my driver-side window, cracking the reinforced glass into a spiderweb pattern.

"Bitch!" Viktor snarled, reaching for the door handle.

I slammed my foot onto the gas pedal. The tires spun furiously against the wet asphalt, kicking up a cloud of smoke and gravel before the car surged forward, throwing Viktor backward onto the pavement.

I tore out of the alleyway, tires screeching, glancing into my rearview mirror as the white van scrambled to reverse and give chase.

I didn't head back to the Sanctuary. I drove straight downtown to the central federal courthouse, where Detective Vance and the night-duty federal magistrate were waiting.
