Chapter 18 - The Federal SweepBy 5:00 AM, the federal task force had mobilized faster than a military strike. Armed with the live audio-video recordings from my phone, Detective Vance secured emergency arrest warrants for Elena Vance and her mysterious handler, Viktor Thorne—a notorious corporate raider known for orchestrating hostile takeovers through intimidation and illegal surveillance.

The raid on the white van and Elena’s downtown hideout was executed with military precision.
I watched from the command vehicle parked down the street as federal agents in tactical gear breached the metal doors of the warehouse. Flashbangs lit up the predawn sky with blinding white light, followed by sharp shouts and the heavy clatter of tactical boots.
Ten minutes later, Elena Vance was marched out of the warehouse in handcuffs, her face pale, her high-end designer coat stained with warehouse dust. Behind her, Viktor Thorne was pinned against the hood of an SUV, his arms cuffed behind his back, cursing furiously at the agents.
Detective Vance walked over to my car, opening the passenger door and sliding into the seat, shaking his head with a grim smile.
"Well, Mave," Vance said, handing me a sealed evidence bag containing the primary transmitter receiver recovered from the van. "It looks like you just uncovered the missing half of the Vanguard syndicate. Viktor Thorne has been under FBI surveillance for three years for international corporate fraud. Vesper wasn't just running a family business—she was laundering Thorne's black-market capital through Vanguard Enterprises."
"And Elena was his inside plant all along," I added, looking out at the flashing red and blue lights reflecting off the wet pavement. "She wasn't just Thaddius’s mistress. She was Thorne's operative planted inside the firm to monitor Vesper and secure the estate's assets if the family ever fell apart."
"And now?" Vance asked, looking at me with deep, unwavering respect. "What's your next move?"
May you like
I looked down at the evidence bag, then out toward the horizon where the first rays of dawn were beginning to paint the sky in brilliant strokes of gold and orange.
"Now," I said quietly, a calm, fierce smile touching my lips, "we finish cleaning house."
