Chapter 6 - The UnravelingChaos erupted in the boardroom instantly. Shouts of outrage bounced off the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city skyline.

"This is an outrage!" Vesper shrieked, standing up so fast her chair tipped backward with a loud crash against the hardwood floor. Her aristocratic facade had completely shattered, replaced by the panicked snarl of a cornered predator. "We are the Vanguard family! You cannot touch us! This is a malicious fabrication by a deranged, grieving woman!"

"Sit down, Vesper," I said, my voice cutting through the noise with chilling clarity. I walked slowly toward the head of the table, stopping just inches from my husband, who looked as though he might vomit right onto his Italian silk tie.

Thaddius looked at me, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror and utter disbelief. "Mave... what have you done? We were supposed to be a family. How could you do this to us?"

"A family?" I laughed, a bitter, hollow sound that made him flinch. "You helped your mother murder our children, Thaddius. You stood over my hospital bed and told me to drop the complaint to protect your inheritance and your precious corporate merger. You didn't lose a family that night—you lost your shield."

Elena Vance was shaking uncontrollably, clutching her designer handbag like a lifeline. "I-I didn't touch her! It was Vesper's idea! Vesper forced me to delete the camera logs! I was just following orders!"

"Shut up, you fool!" Vesper hissed, lunging toward Elena like a striking viper, only to be intercepted instantly by two federal agents who cuffed her wrists behind her back with a sharp click of metal.

Detective Vance stepped forward, holding up a tablet that was actively playing the decrypted audio log from Vanguard Manor. The speakers built into the conference room broadcasted Vesper's cold, calculated voice clear as day for every board member, journalist, and lawyer in the room to hear:

“With those twins, she ties herself to our bloodline forever. Without them, she’s just a temporary inconvenience we can discard...”

The color drained from the faces of every single board member present. The Vanguard name—a symbol of unblemished prestige and generational wealth for over a century—was being broadcasted in real-time to news outlets streaming live across the country.

"Take them out," Detective Vance ordered.

As officers dragged Vesper, Thaddius, and Elena out of the boardroom in handcuffs, flashbulbs blinded us from the doorway where reporters had managed to squeeze past security. Vesper screamed curses, her face twisted in pure hatred, while Thaddius stared at the floor, utterly broken, realizing too late that his entire world had been built on a house of cards.

I stood alone at the head of the table, looking out over the city. The ghost of my grief was still there, heavy and cold, but alongside it burned a new, unshakeable strength.
