Chapter 12 - The Fortress in the Clouds

Upstairs on the seventieth floor, the atmosphere was entirely insulated from the brewing gang war. Nora and Ella sat at the low mahogany table in the grand salon, completely engrossed in a massive puzzle depicting a winter wonderland. A pair of elite private bodyguards stood discreetly near the double doors, their suits tailored, their eyes sharp, maintaining an unyielding perimeter.

Clara Vance’s memory no longer lingered as a ghost of tragedy in the halls; it was a permanent vow carved into the foundation of the penthouse.

The private elevator chime chimed softly, signaling an arrival. Marco stepped out, looking grave, holding a secure encrypted tablet. He knelt down beside Nora, who was struggling to fit a corner piece into place.

"How’s the puzzle coming along, Captain?" Marco asked, his gruff voice softening automatically when addressing the children.

"It’s missing a piece," Nora pouted, holding up the empty space. "It always feels like something is stolen when you can't finish it."

Marco’s chest tightened. He glanced toward the private study where Dominic was coordinating the mobilization of three hundred soldiers. Stolen. The exact word for what had been taken from these girls thirty-eight days before Dominic found them.

"Don't worry," Marco promised, gently patting her head. "Your uncle Dominic is very good at finding missing pieces."
