Chapter 13 - Whispers in the Library

Back at the mansion, the heavy silence of the night was broken only by the scratching of a pen against paper. In the sprawling home library, Valeria sat under the soft amber glow of a desk lamp, surrounded by anatomy textbooks and medical flashcards. Her exams were just three weeks away.

"You're burning yourself out," a deep, smooth voice murmured.

Valeria didn't jump. She felt the familiar warmth before Alejandro even stepped into the light. He placed a warm mug of chamomile tea beside her books, his fingers brushing softly against her hand before lingering for a second too long.

"I have to pass pharmacology, Alejandro," Valeria smiled, looking up into his storm-gray eyes. "I can't spend my entire life hiding behind high stone walls and bodyguards."

"You aren't hiding," Alejandro replied softly, pulling up a leather armchair to sit right beside her. "You're the only reason these walls actually feel like a home."

Before Valeria could answer, the mansion’s primary security grid flickered violently. The amber lights died, replaced by a low, pulsing crimson emergency glow. The smart-home system didn't trigger an alarm; it went entirely silent, locking every internal security door into lockdown mode.

Alejandro was on his feet in a fraction of a second, his hand instinctively sliding toward the concealed holster beneath his linen shirt. "Stay here. Do not open this door for anyone."
