Chapter 4 - The Boss’s Darkest SecretAlejandro’s grip on Valeria’s mouth was iron-tight, his massive frame trembling—not from anger, but from a terror so profound it completely shattered the ruthless facade of the San Pedro cartel boss. Slowly, as Valeria stopped struggling and nodded frantically, he released her, pulling her into an empty linen closet and slamming the door shut behind them.

In the suffocating darkness, illuminated only by the thin sliver of light beneath the door, Alejandro leaned his forehead against the wooden panel, his breath coming in ragged gasps.

"You shouldn't have come out here," Alejandro muttered, his voice cracking. "I told you. That wing is a tomb."

"That wasn't a ghost, Mr. Ríos," Valeria whispered fiercely, her voice shaking with adrenaline. "That was a living person. I saw her. I saw the blood, I saw the scar, I saw the candles. Who is that woman?"

Alejandro turned slowly, his face carved from sheer agony. He reached into his jacket, pulled out a silver flask, took a long, burning swallow, and finally spoke the truth that had poisoned his soul for twenty-four months.

"Two years ago, they didn't just ambush my wife's car to send a message," Alejandro began, his voice dropping to a haunting whisper. "They kidnapped her. The rival Sinaloa faction. They sent me a video—her torture, hour by hour—demanding half my territory, all my port access, and my absolute submission."

Valeria listened, horrified, her hands clutching her jacket. "And the crash? The funeral?"

"It was a decoy," Alejandro said, a tear finally escaping his eye and cutting a clean path down his stubble-jawed cheek. "I paid a fortune to fake a fiery wreckage, to bury an empty casket, to fool my own enemies into thinking she was dead so they would stop hunting her. But they didn't stop. They returned her to me six months later... broken, brain-damaged, unable to speak, and infected with a slow-acting neurotoxin that causes hallucinations and psychotic episodes."

He looked directly at Valeria, his eyes pleading for understanding. "She doesn't know who I am anymore, Valeria. When she wakes, she tries to kill herself, or worse, she attacks Mateo. To the world, Elena Ríos died in that ambush. If my rivals, or even my own captains, find out she is locked in this house alive, they will use her to tear my empire—and my son—apart."

Valeria stared at the powerful man standing before her, seeing past the guns, the bodyguards, and the millions of pesos. He was just a desperate, trapped animal trying to protect the wreckage of his family.

"Is that why Mateo is broken?" Valeria asked softly. "Because he didn't just see his mother die... he saw her come back like a monster?"

Alejandro nodded slowly. "He wanders down here at night. He hears her humming through the vents. He tries to save her, and she screams at him, throwing objects, terrified of her own shadow. That’s why he beats everyone away. He thinks violence is the only way to survive in this house."

Before Alejandro could say another word, a blood-curdling, inhuman screech echoed from the end of the hallway, followed by the sound of shattered glass and frantic footsteps running toward them.
