Chapter 10 - Ashes and EmbersThe sun rose over San Pedro Garza García, casting a golden, deceptive light over a scene of utter devastation. The sprawling mansion was surrounded by flashing police cruisers, federal tactical vans, and fire trucks spraying thick white foam over the smoking ruins of the west wing.

Down by the riverbed, Alejandro Ríos walked slowly through the mud, carrying Elena in his arms. Her breathing was shallow, but she was alive. Marco and Hector flanked him, their weapons lowered, their faces blackened with soot and rain.
As they reached the wrought-iron gates of the estate, a dozen federal agents pointed their rifles at them.
"Don't move, Alejandro! Drop your weapon!" Commander Morales shouted, stepping out from behind a tactical vehicle, looking smug and victorious, flanked by Viktor.
Alejandro stopped. He didn't drop his gun. Instead, he gently lowered Elena onto the grass, entrusting her to Hector, and stood up to his full height. His shoulder was wrapped in a blood-soaked bandage, his clothes torn, but his eyes burned with a terrifying, absolute serenity.
"It's over, Viktor," Alejandro said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the courtyard. "You sold your soul for a pension that the Sinaloa cartel was never going to pay you."
Viktor sneered, stepping beside Morales. "You lost everything, Alejandro. The empire is mine. The boy is dead—Morales’s men secured the panic room an hour ago. You have nothing left."
At that exact moment, a sharp, clear sound cut through the tense silence of the morning air.
Cough.
From behind the shattered security gates, half-hidden behind a thick concrete pillar, a small figure stumbled out into the morning light, coughing from the smoke, wearing an oversized cleaning uniform stained with soot and mud.
Walking right beside her, holding her hand tightly, was Mateo.
The little boy wasn't screaming. He wasn't throwing objects. He looked directly at Alejandro, his dark eyes wide and clear for the first time in two years, and said two words that shattered the silence of the entire morning:
"Papa... come home."
Alejandro’s breath caught in his throat. He dropped his weapon, falling heavily to his knees in the wet grass as Mateo ran straight into his arms, burying his face in his father’s chest and crying real, healing tears.
Morales cursed, raising his pistol toward the boy. "Shoot them! Finish them all!"
Before Morales could pull the trigger, the sound of rotors thundered overhead. Not one, but five black unmarked helicopters descended from the clouds, bearing the insignia of the federal attorney general’s special internal affairs division.
Dozen of elite federal agents fast-roped down, their rifles immediately training not on Alejandro, but on Commander Morales and Viktor.
"Commander Morales, Viktor Vance," an austere voice echoed through a megaphone from the lead helicopter as a senior federal prosecutor stepped out. "You are under arrest for high treason, conspiracy, and unauthorized extrajudicial operations. Drop your weapons now!"
Viktor went completely pale, dropping his radio as federal agents swarmed him, slamming him face-down into the mud.
Valeria stood quietly by the gates, watching the scene unfold, wiping a smudge of soot from her cheek. She turned to walk away down the quiet street toward Santa Catarina, her job finally done.
"Valeria!"
She stopped, turning around.
Alejandro stood there, holding Mateo in one arm, looking at her with an expression no one in Mexico had ever seen on the face of the cartel boss: pure, unadulterated gratitude.

"Where do you think you're going?" Alejandro asked softly, a genuine, warm smile finally breaking through his hardened features. "My son still needs his guardian. And... I think I finally need one, too."
Valeria looked down at her hands, then at Mateo, who was smiling softly for the first time in two thousand days. She wiped a stray tear from her eye, shook her head with a small smirk, and walked back through the iron gates.
