Chapter 9 - Into the Lion’s DenInside the pitch-black panic room, the heavy titanium door groaned.

Valeria held Mateo tight, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. The digital control panel on the wall flickered once, twice, and then flashed a harsh, warning red: SYSTEM OVERRIDE DETECTED. MAINFRAME BREACHED.

A mechanical whirring sound echoed from the heavy locking bolts. Someone outside was using an override code—a master sequence known only to Alejandro and Viktor.

"Valeria..." Mateo whimpered, his small fingers digging into her arm. "Are the bad men coming?"

"No," Valeria whispered fiercely, her voice carrying a calm, unyielding strength that she didn't entirely feel. She looked around the concrete room in the dim emergency glow, spotting a heavy iron crowbar left behind by the maintenance crew. She grabbed it, positioning herself directly between the door and the corner where Mateo sat huddled behind the steel desk.

Clank. Thud.

The massive bolts slid back, and the heavy titanium door swung slowly open.

Standing in the doorway, silhouetted by the red emergency lights of the corridor, was a man in a tactical vest, holding an assault rifle with a suppressor attached. Behind him stood three armed mercenaries.

It wasn't Viktor. It was Commander Morales, head of the federal anti-cartel task force—and Viktor’s primary contact on the payroll.

"Well, well," Morales smiled coldly, stepping into the bunker and lowering his weapon slightly as he spotted the young maid and the small boy. "I expected to find Alejandro down here counting his blood money. Instead, I find a nanny and a brat."

Valeria gripped the iron crowbar tighter, her knuckles turning white. "Step back. You don't know who you're messing with."

Morales laughed, a harsh, mocking sound. "Little girl, Alejandro’s empire fell ten minutes ago. His accounts are frozen, his safehouses are raided, and by sunrise, he'll be food for the fish in the Santa Catarina river. Now, hand over the boy. The new management wants to make sure the Ríos bloodline is permanently erased."

He motioned for the mercenaries to advance.

Valeria didn't hesitate. With a feral, desperate roar born of absolute protection, she lunged forward, swinging the heavy iron crowbar with all her strength. It caught the lead mercenary square in the chest, sending him crashing backward into the console.

Before the second guard could raise his rifle, Valeria kicked the heavy steel door shut with a violent slam, wedging the crowbar through the emergency locking mechanism just as the guard’s hands slammed against the other side.

"Mateo! Run!" Valeria yelled, grabbing the boy’s hand and sprinting toward the emergency ventilation shaft hidden behind the storage rack—a narrow escape tunnel Alejandro had briefly mentioned during their orientation.

Behind them, the heavy titanium door began to buckle under the relentless fire of assault rifle rounds chewing through the steel.
